Our Story
Matt Newell, founder and Director
Apprentice served carpenter and joiner, Matt spent a number of years in the early 80s fitting out racing yachts in Sausalito California and assisting a construction company in Tahoe, on the shores of Lake Tahoe, to build timber frame homes, as is typical in construction on the West Coast of the US.
During this time, he gained a vast amount of knowledge on the construction of timber dwellings, with a massive emphasis on, thermal values and air flow, which are the fundamentals, required for the good health of a building and it’s inhabitants.
Working on boats gave rise to ‘’ingenious thinking’’. There are no straight lines on a racing yacht, everything needs to curve to the contours of the vessel.
‘’Different problems, require different thinking’’
One particular project brief, was to fit four quarter berth bunks. Two fore and two aft.
Also in the brief, was a light weight, navigation station table, that could be used in calm conditions, but stowed, during the heat of competition racing.
He devised an effective, but simple solution.
He used 12mm teak, faced ply, the top trimmed with fine teak batons, held in place with round head brass tacks, for decorative effect. A leg was also fashioned from the same ply and attached to the top with brass piano hinge. The table was then fitted to the main bulkhead, also with brass piano hinge, which enabled the entire ensemble to be folded out of the way during a race.
